What Is Valentine's Day To You?

With Valentine's day quickly approaching, I am doing a lot of thinking about what it means to love. I sometimes feel as though we might never know what it truly means to love, but at least we can continue trying. Is love that topsy turvy feeling we get from a good kiss? Is it the vibe with the person you are sitting at the bar with? Is it the passionate night you will have with your person? What really is it?

I can only speak on my personal beliefs of love, and that is that I don't actually believe in it. I don't believe in what the vast majority call "being in love". It is a common misconception that being in love is the key to any relationship.

"Love conquers all!"

"Love will pull us though!"

"Fall in love all over!"

That is bullshit at its finest. A good kiss from a good vibe is just that. It's hot, it's fun, it's exciting, and nothing more. That fuzzy feeling you get when you have flowers delivered to you on a day about butts simply ends at that.

I mentioned in another one of my posts that love is something we give, not something we feel, and that is where love ends. Love is when we can spare compassion to those that others would cast shame. Love is acceptance. Love is having grace, and understanding, with the one who can talk the talk, but won't walk the walk. Love is letting go of someone you either never imagined, or that you don't want to, because you want their happiness. It is a sacrifice. No, love is not a feeling. It is us, people, continuously pouring from our own cup no matter how empty it gets.

    Read that again.

This Wednesday, check in with yourself. Are you going into this holiday, purchasing gifts, to satisfy the chance that someone is doing the same for you? Are you making grand plans because it is just what you do? Ask yourself why you celebrate Valentine's day. You might discover a healing you have been in need of, or the place in your heart you need to heal. Run toward that healing!

I challenge you to google "the history of Valentine's Day" and read the various articles about the holiday. Ask yourself your reason for celebrating, and if they are genuine or not. Always remember that it is okkay to ask questions.

    All Prossima! Happy Valentine's Day!
